Counselling & Psychotherapy

Virtual and in-person sessions of psychodynamic psychotherapy will soon be offered through Atlantic Yoga Therapy. Sarah is qualifying for licensure through the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists and The College of Counselling Therapists of New-Brunswick. We also hope to host other clinical therapists who offer a combination of somatic therapeutic modalities (body work) with a depth psychology approach.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy has evolved out of the tradition of psychoanalysis and focuses on the ways in which we can come to better know ourselves. Movement toward psychological health in a psychodynamic manner means moving toward greater conscious awareness, greater autonomy, mature development, choice, and freedom. Clinician and client work together to explore and uncover the client's unfolding blueprint of self, including attachment patterns that continue to inform how we conceptualize ourselves and others, emotions and experiences that may be disowned or unexpressed, the symbolism and wisdom available through dreams, and the potential for new learning through the container of the therapeutic relationship. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy considers mental health disorders including anxiety, depression, psychosis, and eating disorders and other addictions through the lens of deeper, unconscious conflict, and the therapy seeks to support insight around the root causes of symptoms that may be causing difficulties in a person's life.

Therapy is different for each unique client and considers personality organization, temperament, culture, and impacts of trauma.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy at AYT is not separate from body-based therapy. Although much may be hidden from our unconscious minds, the body holds all we have experienced and can offer access to unrecognized gifts and potential. The course of therapy includes a focus on regaining presence in one's body and opening the lines of communication with deeper layers of self and layers beyond the  self.
